Malcolm Gladwell could have been describing expert copywriters
In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell refers to the ’10,000 hour rule’ to define expert status. He says that to be successful in any field, to be an expert, requires at least 10,000 hours experience of practising a specific task or discipline. That makes sense to me in the context of expert copywriting. I guess one of my clients had been reading Gladwell when he proclaimed that an expert is someone with 10 years experience in their field’.
Someone who’s valuable to others
Others define experts as people with well-developed stores of procedural knowledge that enable them to do things well. Yet others, that an expert is someone who’s valuable to others or who offers good advice based on their experience and knowledge. Others still, maintain that experts have a holistic understanding of their subject so they understand the big picture and its relationship to details.

And then, of course, there’s the good old Shorter Oxford Dictionary of English (SOED), which defines an expert as ‘a person with the status of an authority (in a subject) by reason of special skill, training, or knowledge; a specialist.’
