In his excellent book Content Chemistry, content marketing expert Andy Crestodina of Orbit Media Studios, defines content marketing as 'the art and science of pulling your audience towards your business. It's based on the concept that there are relevant prospects looking for your product or service right now. If you can connect with them, help them, and teach them, some of them will become loyal customers.'
Content shouldn't be a cheap and cheerful commodity, but a carefully researched and professionally produced resource that you are proud of and which gives real value to your prospects and customers. Importantly, it's not about overtly selling to people, but about generously giving away information that is genuinely useful. Not only do prospects like it, but so do the search engines (in particular Google), which is an added bonus.
A website without a steady stream of useful, relevant and well-written content is nothing more than an online brochure. If you can put your hand on your heart and say that you will never want to get organic search traffic, maybe a brochure site will suffice for you. Realistically though, I think you want more than just an online advert. You want to give prospects and customers a good reason to visit your site, stick around a while, recommend it to their networks and then come back again. And content marketing can help.
By creating and delivering relevant, high-quality information to customers, you can help develop profitable customer responses. Content marketing also helps retain reader attention and build brand loyalty. Somewhere down the line, this usually requires strong copywriting.
I firmly believe that engaging content and well-written copy complement each other – and that one without the other is a missed opportunity either way.
If you fancy having a go at creating your own online content, check out Everybody Writes by Ann Handley. Like Andy Crestodina's book, it's a great resource for creating 'ridiculously good content'. That said, like any specialist skill, it's not quite as easy as reading a book and creating stunning content – I know because I've been crafting my art since the 1990s.
And then there's the question of finding the time... I'm regularly asked to write copy for marketing managers and similar creatives who can write, but who struggle to ring fence time to do so. From experience on the client side of the marketing fence, I know how hard it is to get into a creative state of mind when there are a thousand and one other things going on.
