I hate writing

So you hate writing for business. Okay, hate is a strong word, but some people really don’t enjoy writing at all. Even though you know copywriting is vital for your organisation, perhaps you prefer working on the cut and thrust of selling, on strategy or other aspects of building your business? Or perhaps a condition such as dyslexia makes writing particularly hard for you. Whatever the reason for your dislike of business writing, I can help by getting business writing off your to-do list while you concentrate on the things you like best about being in business…

More about what to do if you hate writing

If you have business writing or copywriting to do and you don't enjoy writing, I'd love you to get in touch and let me help you get those words written and working for you online or in print. It's what I do five, six and sometimes seven days a week. And as I've been doing this as a freelancer since 2006 (and as an employee for years before that), I can do it pretty well and pretty fast.Let'sjust say that, though I never stop learning and practising, I've done the 10,000 hours that Malcolm Gladwell wrote about when he described the time it takes to achieve mastery of a skill.

A few tips if you don't enjoy business writing

Here are a few practical tips to help you if you really don't like business writing but the boss insists that it needs to be done.

  • Improve your knowledge of writing and writing skills. You could start with some of the articles on my site, such as this one, with some of my top writing tips

  • Set yourself a deadline, then focus on writing. User a timer; the end effect is powerful

  • Write as you talk.If necessary, record yourself and transcribe. Another useful exercise is to copy (yes, I said copy) an effective piece of business writing. By so doing, you will start to pick up the rhythms of the professional writer. By the way, this also works for fiction writing. Later, you will develop your own written 'voice' and style. Of course, you won't copy someone else's writing and claim it as your own...

  • Understand what you want to say, to whom you want to say it and why it is important to them.

  • Outline the main elements of your written piece: this applies whether its a brochure, a website page or business blogging. And remember the proven AIDA mnemonic (Awareness, Interest, Desire and Action) as you structure your article or case study.

  • A lot of people say 'I hate writing about myself' (or my company) and I can understand that. Sometimes we are too close to our own business. In that case, try and look at yourself or your organisation objectively. Put yourself in an outsider's shoes and look in. That's what I'll do if you hire me to write for you.

  • Prove your point: use features and corresponding benefits; quotes; testimonials and other supporting items to show rather than tell.

  • Don't try to edit while you write. Just get your writing done, then edit it. Everyone's first-draft is more or less rubbish. Honest! As a professional copywriter, I can assure you that the 'first draft' that my clients see is rarely, if ever, the actual first draft that I wrote. My strategies for writing include provision for writing experimental or 'rough cut' drafts en route to the finished piece.

  • Above all, to overcome the fear of writing, you sometimes need to just write. Practice and practice and accept that 100% of something finished but imperfect is better than striving to craft the perfect piece and never finishing it. This is especially so in the commercial world. It's a fact that given unlimited time and budget, even the most expert writing can be edited and changed ad infinitum. Perfection doesn't exist; a point comes (surprisingly quickly in the writing process) where good enough is good enough and your article needs to get to work. If it's just business-writer's block, you might find this article useful

Give it a whirl. You may be surprised what you can achieve.

But what if I really, really hate business writing?

In that case, we should have a chat and you should let me do what I love while you avoid a bête noire that doesn't give you much pleasure at all. Writing isn't everyone's thing. Sometimes it makes more sense to let a professional get on with it while you use your skills to best advantage doing something else for your organisation.

In that case, please get in touch to arrange a no-obligation initial copywriting consultation by calling 01242 520 573 or emailing me
