Resources for creatives in Cheltenham

Are you interested in resources for copywriters and other freelancers based in or near Cheltenham Spa? If so, here's a selection based on my experience as a locally based freelancer:

  • Coffee shops
  • Bookshops
  • Business networking
  • Inspiring outdoor spaces in and around Cheltenham
  • Executive chauffeur services

This is an unashamedly personal page based on my experience of freelancing in and around Cheltenham and Gloucestershire since 2006. It's not definitive and I'm always interested in adding to it. So if you know of a resource that I should add, please tell me

Coffee shops for Cheltenham creatives

Some copywriters and other freelancers like to work in coffee shops. Others, and I'm among them, prefer to use these resources for meetings and thinking space before heading to other favourite writing locations to work.

I prefer to work from my home office, surrounded by my writing resources, with decently-sized multiple monitors. Sometimes, however, it's good to get a fresh perspective, just get out of the office or meet with clients or strategic partners on neutral ground. That's where a good coffee shop comes into its own and Cheltenham has more than its fair share.

Here are a few of my favourites – you can learn more and read testimonials on various web sites, including TripAdvisor:

  • Gusto Italian Deli, Montpellier Walk
  • Moka, Suffolk Parade
  • SVEA, Rodney Road
  • Cafe Boho, Great Norwood Street
  • My Coffee (was Jack in a Box), Bath Road
  • Andersons, Regent Street
  • The Royal PH, Charlton Kings
  • The Coffee Bean, Lyefield Road West, Charlton Kings
  • The Star Bistro, National Star College, Ullenwood, near Cheltenham
  • Cuppa Coffee & Cake, beside Cheltenham Spa station
  • The Bridge Cafe, Regency Arcade
  • Red Pepper, Regent Street
  • The Queen's Hotel, Imperial Square, Cheltenham

Bookshops for creatives

When you aren't writing or promoting your creative services, what could be more enjoyable than chilling out over a favourite latte or cappuccino with an inspiring book? Here are a few of my favourite bookstores.

I must confess that Amazon and AbeBooks are high on my priority list when I need to top up my professional knowledge with new or secondhand books on writing, marketing or other interests. But I've also made great finds at several Cheltenham secondhand bookstores:

  • Any Sue Ryder shop (I mainly use Brockworth and Portishead, but there are others)
  • Oxfam Bookshop, Cambray Place, Cheltenham GL50 1JP
  • British Red Cross Bookshop, Bath Road, Cheltenham, GL53 7NE
  • Moss Books, 8–9 Henrietta Street
  • Attic Books, 14 St James Street, Cheltenham

Business Networking in Cheltenham

Along with repeat business, referrals and website enquiries, business networking is an important source of enquiries – and a great way for me to contribute to the local business community. I regularly network throughout Gloucestershire, but with so much going on in Cheltenham (apparently, the most important creative hotspot outside London), several of my favourite breakfast networking venues are here in town. If you're based in Cheltenham, one way to meet me is to come along for breakfast and a chat.

Several of these groups (asterisked) are one-seat-per-profession – and I'm the copywriter:

  • Business Networking Cheltenham (BNC), Tuesdays, Hatherley Manor Hotel*
  • Queen's Hotel Networking Group, Alternate Wednesdays, Queen's Hotel*
  • Gloucestershire Business Breakfast Club, monthly at Ellenborough Park Hotel

Inspiring places for Cheltenham creatives

When you've spent enough time in the office and a coffee-shop is just too confining, there's a plethora of inspiring places for a freelance writer in and around Cheltenham:

Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Whistley Wood, above Charlton Kings
  • Cox's Meadow
  • Imperial Square

Executive chauffeur services

And so to a rather special resource for Cheltenham creatives, but one that could be incredibly useful under certain circumstances. For this one I'm going to recommend my friend and client, David Keffler of Azure Chauffeur Driven Luxury Cars based in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. David operates the only private-hire licensed Bentley and BMW X5 in Gloucestershire. And the significance for Cheltenham-based creatives? Well, the BMW is fully equipped with almost every conceivable executive luxury for work on the road: digital TV; wireless internet; privacy glass; air-conditioning; desks; and digital TV. These make the BMW a perfect, potentially cost-effective, option for any business person or freelancer who needs to combine a day of meetings or interviews with writing business documents or creative copy en route. David also does luxury airport transfers, weddings and other executive transfer work too. Just a thought...
