The brief was tight and called for much more than just a travel content writer. But I was up for the challenge and my client loved my writing style, as demonstrated by articles on my website and my monthly travel and holidays column for Gloucestershire's The Local Answer magazine. Some prospective customers for Oro's amazing cycling holidays will already know where they want to go. But for others, it's helpful to offer a taste of the destinations to help them choose between, say, Bavaria and Austria's Enn Valley; or between Northern Italy and Slovenia.
That's why country pages were needed, but not just any old country pages. Oro's had to be a bit different. So, after a bit of thought, I made a comparison between one of the country's top culinary treats and the characteristics of the country for cycle touring: Bavarian sausages; Croatian Kremsnita; Italian pasta...you get the picture. The tour itinerary writing I did involved a detailed understanding of the routes travelled on an Oro cycling tour, the local highlights, culinary specialities and details that add to the atmosphere. It's all about combining exposition of practical itinerary details with inspiring prospective customers. And about getting them to imagine that they are already on the tour and experiencing the majesty of Austria's Krimml Falls, the chic style of Cortina D'Ampezzo or the breathtaking beauty of Croatia's Istrian coast...
A key part of Oro Cycling Tours trips are the excellent, carefully selected hotels and guest houses at the end of each day's two-wheeled exploration. My task was to capture the welcome, atmosphere and individuality of dozens of hotels in towns and cities as different as Ljubljana, Regensburg, Verona and Zell am See. And paint a word picture of their immediate surrounds and must-see sights – the Porsche Design cable car up Zell am See's home mountain, the vineyards surrounding a hotel north of Verona, or the irresistible attraction of beer brewed by Monks at picturesque monasteries in Bavaria. I even needed to draw on my skills as a city guide writer as I captured the essence of cities such as Regensburg and Verona in a few lines...
There was another important challenge too, something I'm acutely aware of as an experienced SEO copywriter. That challenge? Making sure that my hotel copywriting was completely original and avoided the pitfalls of duplicate content that are guaranteed to incense Google.
Writing inspiring website pages is one thing, but crafting engaging travel and tourism blogs for social media and linking them back to your site is an important way to complement the pages on your site. Writing a travel blog was always going to be important for Oro. For the launch of the new website, I was briefed to create a suite of new travel blog posts, based on selected tour itineraries.
After all those itineraries, country pages and hotel descriptions, I worked on other pages including Frequently Asked Questions, details of the tour bicycles, an About Us page featuring the business founder, and of course engaging homepage copy to complement the hard work done by Oro Tours' website development partner.
